 Debra moved to Bluefield, W.V., as a youth. She graduated from Big Creek High School in West Virginia in 1984. Debra enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 30, 1986. She then re-enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 14, 1988, where she met George Vaughan. They married on April 10, 1989, in Tazewell, W.V. After they married, they moved to Otis, Ore.
The couple moved to Germany while George was stationed there between 1990 and 1992. From 1992 until 1996 they lived in Pasadena, Md. 

They returned to Otis in 1996 and have remained there since. 

Debra and George lost their son, Sgt. Michael Vaughan, on April 23, 2007, while serving in Iraq.
Debra was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, especially roses. She was a member of Lincoln County Search and Rescue and the Blue Star Mothers of America, an organization for mothers who have or had children in the service.

 Debra, an honor graduate in the Army, outscored peers in the Air Force, Navy and Marines and she was offered a teaching position at Fort Devens, Mass.
